Amazing Chinese Characters (41) Head - 首

The shell bone script for character Head is


exactly like a head of dog, or cow, or another animal.

Its small script is


changed a lot. It is more like a human head with a face and three hair on the top. I can only guess that there were many shell bone scripts for Head, some liked animal head, some liked human head, the Mr. Si Li who was the guy to unify the characters under the order of The First Emperor chose the one similar to human head. Because we only have found some shell bone scripts, which we only understand partial of them, so the character Head which is similar to human head may not have been found, or understood.

Its clerical script is


similar to the small script. But less hair, and rectage face instead of round one.

same as the clerical script.

Its Pinyin is "Shou3".

Amazing Chinese Characters (40) Island - 岛

The big seal script for character Island is


which is similar to the following


which is river. The curves are water flow.  Now there is a circle in the middle of the river, which is a island. It is a good pictography character.

which has three islands.

Its clerical script is


similar to the older scripts, but the flow are straight down without curve except the left one, the island circles are replaced by dots.

same as the clerical script.

The character means "A independent place", such as State of U.S.

The shell bone script for character Insect is



a drawing or picture of insect.

the first one has one insect, the second has three insects. They look like insect(s), but not as good as the shell bone script does.

similar to the second small seal script.

only one insect, which is enough to tell the meaning. It is a good simplified character.

The Shell Bone script for character Arrow is



just like an arrow, sharp and hard.

still like arrow, just a little bit round, not as sharp as Shell Bone script.

Its Clerical script is


changed too much to be like an arrow anymore, the pictography is damaged.

Amazing Chinese Characters (37) People - 人

The Shell Bone script for character People is


a person side image.

Its Small Seal script is


similar, but the back is bent as big as an Ape.

Its Clerical script is


not much similarity. It is hard to see anything like a person, not pictography anymore.

Its current standard printing script for traditional or simplified character is


impossible to simplify anymore. It is one of the simplest characters. 

Its Pinyin is "Ren2".



Amazing Chinese Characters (36) Silk - 丝

The Shell Bone script for character Silk is


a picture of two bouquet of thread, very typical pictography character.

Its Small Seal script is


very similar, and beautiful.

Its Clerical script is


some similarity. Basically, the round cycles are replaced by open, sharp turn straight lines. It is not much pictography anymore.

same as Clerical script.

changed further from the traditional one.

Amazing Chinese Characters (35) Horn - 角

The Shell Bone script for character Horn is



exactly like a horn. It is more like a picture than a character.

Its Small Seal script is


not as good as the Shell Bone script, but still like a horn.

Its Clerical script is


some similarity to the above two older scripts, but people would not be able to relate it to a horn if they didn't see the older scripts.

Its current standard printing script for traditional or simplified character is


same as the Clerical script.

Its Pinyin is "Jiao3"




Amazing Chinese Characters (34) Rice Crop - 禾

The Shell Bone script for character Rice Crop is


You may have no idea for this picture. Let's see its Big Seal script


You see a big dropping ear of rice on the top left. It is a pictography character.

Its Small Seal script is


similar, only the ear of rice doesn't drop.

Its Clerical script is


not good pictography, but still has some degree similarity.

Its current standard printing script is


same as the Clerical script.

Its Pinyin is "He2".

Amazing Chinese Characters (33) Swallow - 燕

The Shell Bone script for character Swallow is


a picture of lovely swallow. It is a pictography character.

Its Small Seal script is


changed a lot, but very beautiful, and symmetrical picture of swallow.

Its Clerical script is


changed a lot again. All curve lines become straight, the tail are four dots. But is still pictography.

Its current standard printing script for traditional or simplified character is


same as the Clerical script.

Amazing Chinese Characters (32) Pick - 采

The Shell Bone script for character Pick is


a hand picking up fruits on a tree. The top is character - claw,the bottom is character - fruit.  It is an ideogram character from a combination of two pictography characters.

Its Small Seal script is


very similar to the Shell Bone script, the lines are more smooth.

Its Clerical script is


beautiful but less pictography, the claw has seperated three dots,  and three fruits on the top of the tree disappeared.

same as the Clerical script.

Its Pinyin is “Cai3".

The Shell Bone script for character Fruit is


a picture of tree with fruits on the top.

only one fruit left,but much bigger.

similar to the Small Seal script but straight lines make it less pictography.

Amazing Chinese Characters (29) Pot - 壺

The Shell Bone script of character Pot is


a picture of pot.

Its Small Seal script is


still very like a pot.

Its Clerical script is


beautiful but not as round as a pot, it is still a pictography character.

Its running script is

same as Clerical script.

Its current standard pinting script for simplified character is


very similar, minor difference in the bottom, no seal any more, damaging the pictography.

Its Pinyin is "Hu1".



Amazing Chinese Characters (28) Bright - 明

The Shell Bone script for character Bright is


formed by two pictography characters: - the Sun on the left, and -the Moon on the right. If there are a Sun and a Moon at the same time, it is bright.

This is an ideogram character.

Its Small Seal script is



similar to the Shell Bone script.

There is another Seal script for this character


 The left represents a window. The moonlight through the window is bright. It was used from 2000+ years ago to one hundred years ago, still used by calligraphists.

just put the Clerical script for Sun and Moon together.
